Christ as Light of the World
Christ as the true light that enlightens every man (John 8:12). He shares His name with the Apostles, Doctors, and Preachers ("You are the light of the world"). Basil: Christ is like a fountain perpetually flowing, bestowing His own prerogatives on others. Through man, namely Jesus Christ, all creatures were to be deified. Man was especially created in the image of Christ.
Chapter I (The Six Days of Creation)
-
Verse 3: And God said: Let there be light
— Christ incarnate is the light of the world; He shares His name with the Apostles ("You are the light of the world"). Basil: Christ is like a fountain perpetually flowing, bestowing His own prerogatives on others.
"Allegorically, Christ incarnate is the light of the world, John 8:12: "He was the true light that enlightens every man coming into this world." Hence the same name is shared by Christ with the Apostles, Doctors, and Preachers"
-
Verse 31: And God Saw All Things That He Had Made, and They Were Very Good
— "Very good" is added because through man, namely Jesus Christ, all creatures were to be deified.
"through man, namely Jesus Christ, all creatures were to be deified: for once the humanity of Christ was deified, all creatures also, which are contained in Him, were wonderfully deified."
-
Verse 27: Male and Female He Created Them
— Man was especially created in the image of Christ; "whom He foreknew, He predestined to be conformed to the image of the Son."
""Of God," that is, of Christ, who is God: for man was especially created in the image of Christ."
