Society of Jesus
Catholic religious order founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540. Cornelius a Lapide entered the Society on 8 July 1592, saying he had been called by the Blessed Mother of God. The order established institutions throughout the Low Countries, including a Novitiate and College in Mechlin. Mutius Vitelleschi served as Superior General, granting permission for the Pentateuch commentary to be printed. Charles Scribani served as Provincial Superior of the Flandro-Belgica province.
